Ardella Crawford was born in Toronto, Ontario. She spent many of her early years in Colorado and northern Idaho. When she was a little girl, she wanted to teach, and she has always liked to write; she intended to teach elementary school, so it was a bit of a surprise when she started teaching English at a community college in southeastern Colorado in 1986. Since then, Ardella has taught a wide variety of composition and literature classes to college freshmen in many institutions of higher learning. She currently teaches at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she especially enjoys the spring semester of composition, during which students learn to write about literature by reading fantasy literature.

Ardella is married to Dr. Paul Crawford, who is a professor of ancient and medieval history. When she is not teaching or editing, she loves to read, listen to classical music, play with her three cats, tend to her flowers and herb garden, play games (including—especially—FRPGs), cook, or drink a good microbrew. She also reviews early music (medieval through baroque) for American Record Guide, a magazine of classical music reviews.
